Welcome to Basketball Manitoba:
Together We Grow Basketball Players.

Basketball Manitoba, along with our members and partners, has a large number of player development opportunities for all ages and levels. Whether you’re 5 or 55, we have something for you!

Basketball is a tremendous team sport that can be played for a lifetime, be it on the driveway or right through to the Olympics. Its a great teacher of teamwork, cooperation, respect and positive social skills.  Basketball develops a wide range of important motor skills including running, throwing, catching, shooting, footwork, balance, agility, coordination and endurance.

Why Play Basketball?
  1. It’s fun.  Basketball is the second most popular sport in the world, behind only soccer. In Canada, basketball is now the most played sport for ages 12-17. Basketball is a high-energy activity that helps develop athletic, social, and sport-specific skills that carry over into our everyday lives and last a lifetime.
  2. It’s social.  Being a team sport, basketball helps develop many important life skills including teamwork, sharing, leadership, and communication.
  3. It’s everywhere.  Most schools offer a basketball program for students whether it be in physical education classes, intramurals or on competitive school teams. Many community and recreation centres offer a basketball program for children and there are adult-based leagues.  Best of all, most basketball is played indoors in a climate controlled environment meaning no cold mornings or rainouts!
  4. It’s simple.  To play you need only a basketball, a pair of running shoes, shorts and a T-shirt.  Most gyms, if not all, have a basketball hoop and many parks and schoolyards have outdoor hoops. Bring a friend and play some one-on-one in the driveway. Join our message board to see what others are doing and get some informal pick-up games going. 3 on 3 basketball is getting bigger and bigger each year and we can help you find the resources you need to host an outdoor tournament or get your information out.
  5. It’s inexpensive.  Relative to other sports, basketball is very affordable. You can even play it for free at your local outdoor court - check out our outdoor court map to find one near you.  Leagues are run at the lowest possible cost to get as many people involved. If you need help with your fees, there are options through Sport Manitoba’s KidSport program.
  6. It can lead to fantastic experiences and opportunities.  If you find a passion for the sport and develop into an outstanding player, you may find that basketball will offer you unique life experiences by playing on travelling club teams, high school teams, our Provincial Teams, university teams, or even our Canadian National Team. Put in the work and see where basketball can take you.

    Welcome to Basketball Manitoba:
    Together We Grow Basketball Coaches.

Basketball Manitoba, along with our members and partners, has a large number of coaching development opportunities for all levels of basketball coaches. Whether you are just starting out in coaching your child’s team or looking to make coaching a profession, we have something for you!

Basketball is a tremendous sport that can be coached for a lifetime.  Many coaches are former players whose passion for the game didn't end when their playing careers did.  Many continue in the sport to give back to the next generation of players the benefits and opportunities they received when they were younger. We are here to get you involved in a fantastic sport as a coach. You have come to the right place to grow your passion for basketball!

     Why Coach Basketball?

    1. To stay involved. Is your playing career starting to wind down? Coaching is a fantastic way to stay involved in basketball, stay active, and spread your passion and knowledge to others.
    2. To give back. Many current basketball coaches played the game at one time. They now recognize that they had a person who stepped up and made a difference in their lives when they were young. This is your chance to give back to the next generation of basketball players.
    3. It’s fun. Spending time with young athletes and helping them develop in a sport we love is FUN and keeps you feeling young! Coaching can be the highlight of your day!
    4. It’s rewarding. Seeing young people develop skills over a period of time and become better basketball players as well as better people can be very rewarding.
    5. It’s social. The fraternity of basketball coaches in Manitoba is wide and diverse.  Volunteering in a leadership role can open many other doors for you, be it in the workforce or other opportunities.

    Where can I coach?

Most schools, clubs and community clubs offer some level of basketball.  Many successful coaches stayed connected with a school or club they played for or attended by starting out as an assistant coach with their former program.  It's as easy as calling or visiting your former coach, phys ed teacher or club convenor and saying, “I want to coach”!  If you are new to coaching, the best is to work with an experienced coach to help with the transition.

However, many new coaches are put into a head coaching role with limited resources.  That’s where we come in.  You can find out about all our coaching resources, services and development opportunities in the above ‘COACHES’ drop-down menu.
